Which Types of Sod Are Best for Outdoor Sports?

When it comes to selecting the best type of grass sod for a sports field, there are a number of factors you’ll need to consider. Various sports have different requirements of the grass on which they are played, so you’ll need to evaluate grasses to meet these requirements and get the best possible results. Durability, resistance to pests and disease, suitability in sun or shade, weed-fighting capabilities, and overall consistency are among the most common concerns, regardless of the sport. Here’s a look at some common outdoor sports and how to choose the best sod for each field.

Tennis

While many tennis matches are played on clay, concrete or other surfaces, some, including the illustrious Wimbledon tournament, take place on grass courts. Because the ball bounces off the surface of the grass on nearly every turn, consistency is key. For a smooth, flat tennis court, you’ll need a grass variety that takes well to being cut incredibly short, typically no more than a quarter of an inch, rather than being allowed to grow to longer lengths. It also needs to be highly durable to withstand heavy foot traffic during matches while being cut so short. In northern climates, perennial ryegrass is a great choice, but here in the south, Bermuda sod will likely be the best option for the local climate.

Football

In football, it is relatively uncommon for the ball to touch the ground during live play, so the overall consistency of the grass is of less importance than it is for some other sports. However, to help players avoid injury, the grass should still have some level of consistency. Because players wear cleats, the grass can take a bit of a beating over the course of a football season, so durability is a key concern. While youth football fields will likely be in full sun throughout the day, professional fields in stadiums may get more shade, particularly in the mornings and evenings. Kentucky bluegrass is a popular choice for football fields in Florida, as is Bermuda grass.

Golf

The quality of the grass is of utmost importance on golf courses, as the ball often rolls over the surface. Bumps and irregularities in the grass can disrupt the path of the ball, especially during putting, so a smooth surface is key on greens. Although, fairways must be relatively smooth as well. For the rough, course managers typically allow the grass to grow a bit taller to add more challenge to the course. Here in Florida, there are many Bermuda grass options available such as Tifway 419, Celebration, and Bimini Bermuda that are very popular.

Other Sports

Soccer, baseball, softball, rugby, lacrosse and other sports that have grass fields have slightly different requirements. With larger balls and less reliance on rolling, durability tends to be the primary concern. The sod’s ability to propagate to fill in gaps to prevent bare patches is important as well. As for many other sports, Bermuda grass is a common choice for mixed-use sports fields. To boost the field’s ability to fill in bare spots, try overseeding during the cooler months with ryegrass. This combination will give you the best features of both types of grasses while also providing a smooth, even playing field.
