How to Revive Your Lawn After Winter: Spring Care Tips from Duda Sod

Florida’s mild winters leave most turfgrasses partially dormant. As spring approaches—typically late February in central and southern Florida and mid-April in the north, it’s time to rejuvenate your lawn. Here’s how to get it back to lush, green perfection.

Prepping the Lawn for Spring

Start by removing dead leaves, sticks, and other debris to ensure sunlight and air reach your grass. Aerate compacted soil using a core aerator to improve drainage and help roots access oxygen and nutrients. Space plugs 4-6 inches apart.

Soil Testing and Fertilizing

Check your soil’s pH level with a tester. A neutral pH (6-7) is ideal. If the soil is acidic (below 7), use an alkaline fertilizer; if alkaline (above 7), opt for an acidic fertilizer.

  • Central/South Florida: Fertilize mid to late March.
  • North Florida: Wait until mid-April to fertilize.
Applying fertilizer too early can promote weed growth and leach nutrients past the root zone.

Tackle Weeds

Once you’ve applied fertilizer, you will also start watering the lawn deeply. Unfortunately, that’s when the weeds will also revive. Depending on how bad your weed problem is, you can either remove them individually by pulling them up by the roots or apply a lawn-friendly herbicide to get rid of them.

Reseed Bare Spots

Over-seed thin or bare patches, applying extra seed to problem areas. Water twice daily for two weeks to ensure seeds sprout and establish roots.

Adjust Mowing Height

Start mowing with the blade set 1 inch higher than usual to allow grass to grow stronger. Lower it to summer height by May.
